Why Shutters Direct?

What are your shutters made from?

  • Our wood plantation shutters are made from your choice of quality solid hard woods. We use the best available kiln dried wood, manufactured from yellow poplar, phoenix, elm and more. Shutters made from these types of wood are equally hard-wearing and durable, but result in different looks, depending on which style you prefer. We only use wood sourced from FSC certified forests.

Other options are Ecco wood (LDF) for a robust shutter at a lower price, aluminium or kiln dried Red cedar for our outside shutters and fully waterproof polyvinyl shutter for high moisture environments.

Poplar Shutters - What is Yellow Poplar?

Yellow poplar shutters are made from wood harvested from the poplar tree. It has been popular in the manufacture of quality shutters in North America for a number of years.

The poplar tree is very fast growing and provides a smooth and consistent grain that gives your shutters strength throughout. Wooden shutters made from poplar have a lovely smooth finish with minimal marking. All our wood shutters are made from wood that is sustainably sourced.

Elm Shutters - What is Elm?

Wood shutters made from elm are very similar in appearance to Oak shutters, with a deep grain detail. This wood option is ideal if you prefer to see a more detailed grain within your shutters. Most customers choosing elm shutters opt for a stained finish, which really shows off the stunning depth of grain when they’ve been installed. If you’re choosing elm, you can select from a wide variety of different colour stains for your shutters. All our wood shutters are made from wood that is sustainably sourced.
  • Phoenix Shutters – What is Phoenix?

Phoenix wood provides a very durable shutter that has a weight advantage over the other shutters. Is has a light grain effect that can be seen even when the wood has been painted. All our real wood shutters are made from wood that is sustainably sourced.

    Which wood should I choose?

We offer multiple choices of real wood, with varying grain effects. It's entirely up to you. There is no right or wrong answer - it's just down to your aesthetic preference and which look you prefer. All our hard wood shutters are equally high quality and are made from wood that is sustainably sourced.

What slat sizes do you offer?

Our shutters are available in a wide variety of slats sizes. You can choose either a 47mm, a 64mm, 89mm or 114mm shutters slat option.

We no longer offer shutters with 32mm slats as most customers found this slat size too fussy. The 32mm slats also block out too much light from the room and the basic principle of good shutter design is to keep it simple - less wood, everything in proportion and keep true to the design and style of the window.

All our wooden shutters are made with the slats being 'true size' which means they have a good 1cm overlap. This provides maximum privacy and minimum light intrusion at night when the shutters are closed.

  • Our shutters are available with a hidden tilt rod system called 'Open Sky'. We offer our shutters with either a regular push rod or a hidden push rod as a no-cost option.

What sizes and shapes can you do?

If you have an unusual shaped window, we can make a shutter to fit it. Shapes include circular, triangular, sunburst, café style, T-posts and corner profiles. Our experienced cabinet makers and technicians will install your shutters to maximum effect, allowing you to control the light and mood of your room for years to come.

Do you make solid wooden shutters?

Yes - we offer two different types of solid shutters. Solid shutters are best suited to Victorian or Edwardian sash windows, which may have had solid shutters on them originally. Solid shutters are available as a solid raised panel which has molded detail to give the appearance of having been originally installed. These shutters have a slight beading detail.

The other option is solid shaker shutters. These have a flat insert panel and are ideal if you want a simpler, more minimalist look.
All solid shutters are available in either poplar hard wood or elm hard wood. When buying solid shutters in a stained finish, the cost is slightly higher, due to the cost of sourcing solid pieces of wood in the size required.

How often will I need to repaint or stain my shutters?

As we use high quality paint and stain processes, your shutters will

  • not need retreating for around 7 - 10 years. Of course, this varies depending on how well you treat your shutters, but as long as you treat the panels with respect, your shutters will last a lifetime!

Shutters are available from lots of companies on the web and in magazines and many have the same photos. Why is this?

Shutters have grown in popularity considerably in the Benelux, with many new companies entering the market, selling identical shutter products. Most of these shutters are made by one Manufacturer in China, sold to an importer in the Benelux and then sold to small shutter companies who sell the product on to you.

At Shutters Direct, we differ from all the rest. We’ve always focused on quality and see no sense in offering inferior products to save a small amount of money. By controlling all aspects of our operation directly, our service is second to none and you know you are in safe hands.

Despite the high quality of our wood shutters and our excellent service, our shutters are still very good value. Our shutters are premium quality and expertly installed by our own technicians.
Shutters Direct shutters are exclusive and are not sold by any other shutters company in The Netherlands. Call us on 31 165 392 066 to discover why we're unique.

Shutters are for sale via a local blind company. Should I buy my shutters from them?

There is much more involved in the measuring and installation of shutters than in blinds. Our in house technicians install shutters every day, so they have a level of experience and expertise that you won't find in your local blind shop.

  • Who measures and installs your shutters?

Our approach to shutters stands out from other companies in that our entire team is exceptionally knowledgeable about shutters. You will be visited by an in-house Consultant who has extensive knowledge of good shutter design and a clear understanding of the different methods of installation. This person will often be one of our Company Directors. They are experienced in quality shutter design and will give you a host of shutters design options for you to consider.

Shutters are installed directly by one of our installation technicians - all of whom are carpenters by trade. Unlike many shutter companies, we do not outsource the installation of our wood shutters.

As a Shutters Direct customer, you will only deal with staff who are direct members of our team. We do not outsource any aspect of our business so you can feel confident that your design consultation will be with one of our own non-commission driven team and your plantation shutters installed by our own carpenters.

The comments from satisfied customers are great. However, how can I be sure they are genuine?

When Shutters Direct installs shutters for our customers, we leave a feedback form. This form asks questions about our shutters, our service, the overall customer experience, our cleanliness, value for money - basically an opportunity for our customers to give open and honest feedback. In our view, the measure of a company is not only in how they handle things before the sale, but how they care for the customers afterwards and resolve any issues that may arise.

  • With access to information so easy nowadays, there is no point in trying to lie about your products or service. If our service or products were poor, there would be negative comments posted around the internet and Shutters Direct would gain a bad reputation. We can assure you that all comments about our shutters and the service we provide are genuine.

    How does your pricing work?

Shutter pricing can be confusing, so we simplify everything with an all-inclusive offer. Our quoted prices include measurement, supply, installation and travel costs – one price fits all. This means that you know you can keep to your budget and won’t have any nasty surprises.

    Why is your service unique?

We have a love of shutters and a belief in our product that has propelled us to become among the most successful shutter companies in The Netherlands and Belgium. Our shutters themselves are designed, manufactured and unique to us, made to the highest quality standards using the finest available materials and installed by expert carpenters.
