Shutters Glossary

Understanding shutters

Which Shutter? Which Company ? Choosing Shutters can seem a little daunting, as not only are you trying to find the best company to work with, but you have a whole new terminology to understand as well.

We like to try and present the shutters that we offer very step by step, so we've put together a helpful dictionary of terms.

Top Rail - The solid part at the very top of the shutters panel

Bottom Rail - The solid part at the very bottom of the shutters panel

Mid Rail - Shutters can be specified with a solid horizontal section of wood called a mid rail. Other terms you may hear applied to this part of the shutters is divide rail or support rail. This rail gives strength and support to the structure of the shutter panel. Shutters with a mid rail enable separate control of the slats on the upper and lower sections, which brings a number of practical benefits. For instance in bathrooms or bedrooms where you may want more privacy.

Frame - Shutters are manufactured and installed within their own frames. The number of sides very much depends on the you taste, the shape of the windows and which way the open and close. Suffice to say we have different frame options are available to suit your shutters and windows.

Stile - The shutters stile is the solid vertical part of the actual shutter panel. We offer a choice of different designs to suit all situations
